Sagewood walks ‘Out of the Shadows’ to honour lives lost and support suicide prevention

As World Suicide Prevention Day approaches, early childhood education and care (ECEC) provider Sagewood Early Learning is stepping forward to raise awareness and vital funds through Lifeline’s Out of the Shadows Walk.
Held annually on 10 September, World Suicide Prevention Day is a time to reflect, remember and act. In Australia, suicide remains a national tragedy, claiming more than 3,000 lives every year an average of nine people each day. Behind every number is a person, a family member, a friend, a colleague, a loved one. The impact is profound and far-reaching, affecting individuals, families, workplaces and entire communities.
This year, Sagewood will participate in Lifeline’s Out of the Shadows Walk, a community initiative that brings people together to walk in memory of those lost, and in solidarity with those who are struggling. It is a symbolic and powerful demonstration of connection, compassion and collective commitment to saving lives.
For Sagewood, taking part in the walk is deeply personal and professional. As an organisation committed to supporting the wellbeing of children, families and educators, Sagewood recognises the importance of mental health and the need for open, ongoing conversations around suicide prevention.
“Our participation is about more than raising money, it’s about breaking down stigma, showing support and reminding people that they are not alone,” Co founder and Chief Operating Officer Jay Barr said. “This is a walk for those we’ve lost, and for those still with us who need to know help is available.”
The funds raised will support Lifeline’s 24/7 crisis support and suicide prevention services, which respond to more than one million contacts each year. Lifeline offers phone, text and online chat services, as well as community education and support initiatives designed to help people in crisis and prevent suicide before it occurs.
Sagewood is inviting others in the ECEC sector and the broader community to join them in walking or donating. Contributions of any size can make a meaningful difference, helping Lifeline continue to provide free, confidential support to those in need.
“To everyone who walks with us, donates to our team or simply shares the message thank you,” Ms Barr added. “Together, we can help shine a light into the darkness.”
The Out of the Shadows Walk reflects values shared by many in the ECEC sector, empathy, community, and a commitment to the wellbeing of all. As educators, service providers and advocates, ECEC professionals play a critical role in supporting families and communities, particularly during times of distress or crisis.
