Getting silly for a serious cause

Red Nose Day will be held this year on Thursday, 28 August 2025, inviting all Australians to get silly for a serious cause and help stop little lives being cut short while supporting grieving families.
Red Nose Australia continues its mission to prevent sudden and unexpected infant deaths, such as sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) and stillbirth through vital research, grief support and public education, with remarkable success in reducing SIDS rates since the advent of the “Back to Sleep” campaign.
With Red Nose Day approaching, Red Nose Australia is calling on early childhood educators to play a more active role. They are urging for the mandatory implementation of national safe-sleep training, emphasising the importance of equipping educators with consistent knowledge, practical tools and enforcement of high standards.
Proposed training measures might include:
Regular professional learning sessions on safe sleep best practices.
- Embedding risk assessments into sleep and rest procedures, in line with guidelines from ACECQA and Red Nose.
- Incorporating safe sleep information into induction programs for new staff.
These steps support services in upholding quality care and compliance with the National Quality Framework while safeguarding the health and wellbeing of infants.
Red Nose Day thrives on creativity and fun, think disco parties, red-nose photo challenges, and merchandise such as plush toys or themed attire. These lighthearted expressions help raise significant funds for research and bereavement support.
ECEC services can contribute meaningfully by:
- Hosting Red Nose Discos, dance events or creative dress-up days.
- Rock the Red and host a Red themed event
Such initiatives bring communities together, strengthen connections, and reinforce the belief that even the smallest gestures can contribute to substantial impact.
Red Nose Day serves as an important reminder to critically examine and update sleep and rest policies.
While October 2023 introduced legal requirements mandating sleep-related risk assessments and policy updates, Red Nose Day offers a timely prompt for services to reflect and re‑commit to safe sleep excellence.
