An urgent roundtable convened by Queensland Education Minister John-Paul Langbroek has brought to light pressing issues within the state's early childhood education and care (ECEC) sector, following recent allegations of child abuse in Victoria.

The meeting, held in Cairns on July 9, 2025, gathered key stakeholders to discuss systemic challenges affecting the safety and quality of childcare services.
This initiative was prompted by the rising nationwide concerns about safeguarding practices in early learning environments.
Minister Langbroek described the forum as a “crucial step” in confronting the challenges the ECEC sector faces and underscored the importance of rebuilding public trust.
Minister Langbroek emphasised the necessity of a coordinated national response to enhance child protection measures. He acknowledged the limitations of existing systems and the need for comprehensive reforms to prevent such incidents from recurring.
Attorney-General Deb Frecklington also addressed the forum, announcing plans to expedite legislation that would introduce a mandatory child abuse reporting scheme. The new legal framework will reinforce the duty of care owed by all professionals working with children and close loopholes that currently hinder early intervention.
Stakeholders in attendance welcomed the commitment to reform and called for ongoing engagement with the sector to co-design practical, culturally safe and inclusive solutions.
National peak bodies and advocacy organisations are closely monitoring Queensland’s actions as potential models for broader policy reform. Many believe the outcomes of this roundtable could inform future updates to the Child Safe Standards and related regulatory instruments under the Australian Children’s Education & Care Quality Authority (ACECQA).
