National pyjama day 2025: Supporting children in foster Care through learning

On Friday, 25 July 2025, early childhood education and care (ECEC) services across Australia are encouraged to participate in National Pyjama Day, an initiative by The Pyjama Foundation aimed at raising awareness and funds to support children in foster care

Participants are invited to wear their favourite pyjamas to work, school, or community events, symbolising comfort and care while contributing to a meaningful cause. Funds raised will support The Pyjama Foundation's Love of Learning Program, which pairs trained volunteers, known as 'Pyjama Angels', with children in out-of-home care to provide weekly mentoring focused on literacy, numeracy, and life skills.

With over 45,000 children living in foster care across Australia, many face significant educational challenges. Research indicates that 92% of children in care are below average reading levels by age seven, and 57% do not complete high school . The Love of Learning Program aims to address these disparities by fostering positive, consistent relationships that support educational engagement and personal development.

ECEC providers can register to host a Pyjama Day event at any time during July or August. Upon registration, services will receive a free host kit containing promotional materials such as posters, balloons, and stickers to facilitate event planning and fundraising efforts.

In addition to participating in Pyjama Day, services may consider integrating related activities into their curriculum, such as storytelling sessions, discussions about empathy and diversity, or creative arts projects that highlight the importance of community support for children in care.

By engaging in National Pyjama Day, ECEC professionals not only contribute to a vital cause but also model social responsibility and compassion for young learners. This initiative aligns with the National Quality Standard, particularly Quality Area 6, which emphasises collaborative partnerships with families and communities.
