New public preschools to boost early learning access in Sydney’s north-west

The NSW Government has announced the construction of two new public preschools as part of a major infrastructure package to meet rising demand in Sydney’s rapidly growing north-west. Located in Gables and Box Hill, the preschools will support access to high-quality, fee-free early childhood education, co-located with new public primary schools for streamlined family access.

Construction begins in Gables on new preschool and primary school

Work is now underway on a new public preschool and primary school at 1 Pennant Way, Gables. The preschool will offer early learning to up to 120 children each week and will open alongside the primary school for Day 1, Term 1 2027. By co-locating services, the initiative aims to simplify drop-offs and pick-ups for families with multiple children and strengthen transitions from early learning into school.

Box Hill to welcome integrated preschool, primary and high school

In Box Hill, designs have been revealed for a comprehensive new education precinct on Terry Road, which will include a public preschool, a 1000-place primary school and a 1000-place high school, all opening in Term 1 2028. The preschool will provide fee-free learning for up to 120 children each week, co-located with the schools to support continuity of learning and family convenience.

Temporary school access expanded while permanent infrastructure is built

To address immediate demand, the NSW Government has expanded enrolment access at the temporary Box Hill Public School initially opened to Kindergarten to Year 2 students in Term 1 this year. From Term 3, the school will welcome Years 3 to 6, while a temporary high school on the same site will begin enrolling Year 7 students from Term 1 2026.

Delivering on early learning infrastructure in high-growth suburbs

The developments are part of a broader $9 billion investment in public education infrastructure across New South Wales, which includes the delivery of 100 public preschools by 2027—51 of which will be in Western Sydney. The new preschools at Gables and Box Hill respond directly to growing demand identified in the Government’s Enrolment Growth Audit and follow years of unmet need in The Hills area.

NSW Premier Chris Minns said the projects represent a long-awaited commitment to families in the region.

“Thousands of families moved into this area on the promise of new schools that were never delivered by the former government – we’re delivering those schools, with construction underway and doors set to open for thousands of local kids,” he said.

Acting Minister for Education and Early Learning Courtney Houssos added, “Every child deserves access to a great local public school, and these schools are being delivered as quickly as possible for the local community who have fought hard to have their educational needs met.”

With construction progressing and permanent infrastructure planned for the coming years, the addition of public preschools in Gables and Box Hill marks a significant step forward in supporting children’s access to quality early learning close to home.
