New microskill course supports inclusive practice for NSW early childhood educators

A new online professional learning course is now available to early childhood education and care (ECEC) professionals in New South Wales, aimed at strengthening inclusive practice and improving support for autistic children.

Titled Autism Awareness for Early Childhood Professionals, the fee-free microskill was developed by Autism Awareness Australia in collaboration with the NSW Department of Education and TAFE NSW, as part of the broader Early Childhood Education and Care Professional Learning Program.

Designed to be completed in approximately two hours, the course comprises five interactive modules covering:

  • Early signs of autism in babies, toddlers and preschoolers
  • Gender differences in autism presentation
  • Dispelling common myths
  • Strategies to support sensory, emotional and communication needs
  • Practical tools and resources to support inclusive programming

Educators who complete the course receive a certificate, contributing to their professional development requirements.

The initiative is part of a wider effort to provide accessible, targeted learning opportunities for NSW ECEC professionals, supporting both skills development and career growth. Eligible participants can access a suite of online programs through the ECEC Professional Learning Program, including leadership development and role-specific upskilling.

Nicole Rogerson, CEO of Autism Awareness Australia, said the microskill was developed with practical impact in mind. “This isn’t just another box-ticking training module,” she said. “It challenges autism myths, builds confidence, and gets to the heart of what inclusive education looks like for our youngest learners. When educators can respond with empathy and understanding, they change lives and they’re far less likely to burn out while doing it.”

The course is available to all NSW early childhood educators, regardless of prior experience with autism, and has been structured for flexible, self-paced completion.
