ACT Education Minister promises crackdown on childcare providers in it ‘to make a profit

ACT Education Minister Yvette Berry has announced a forthcoming crackdown on for-profit childcare providers, emphasising the need to prioritise children’s welfare over profit margins. This move comes in response to recent incidents involving Genius Childcare, where staff walkouts due to unpaid wages and superannuation led to temporary closures of several centres in the ACT.

Berry expressed concerns that some large companies view early education services more as profit-making ventures than as essential human services. She highlighted the limitations of current regulations, stating that while various workplace regulations exist, none effectively address whether a service should be permitted to operate based on its treatment of staff and children.

The ACT Legislative Assembly has acknowledged widespread issues with Genius Education, which operates over 30 centres nationwide, including five in the ACT. In response, the government established a hotline to assist affected families and educators in finding alternative care and employment.

The situation with Genius Childcare underscores the challenges within the for-profit childcare sector, where financial motivations can sometimes overshadow the quality of care and education provided. This has prompted calls for stronger regulatory frameworks to ensure that childcare providers uphold the highest standards of care, prioritizing the well-being of children and the rights of educators.

As the ACT government moves forward with its crackdown, early childhood professionals, centre managers, and stakeholders are encouraged to engage in discussions about best practices and to advocate for policies that support quality, equity, and accountability in early childhood education.
