A new online training package has been launched in Tasmania to support early childhood educators in strengthening young children’s language and literacy skills, with all modules aligned to the science of reading.

The Qualiteach Birth to Five training modules are part of the Tasmanian Government’s Lifting Literacy Plan and are available to all educators working across the early childhood education and care (ECEC) sector. The modules aim to build both theoretical knowledge and practical skills in early language and literacy development.

Minister for Education, Jo Palmer, said the training supports the Government’s 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future, which prioritises strong foundations in the early years.

“The early years are an important time in a child’s life, and through this training, we are making sure our youngest learners are given the best opportunity to build their language and literacy skills,” Minister Palmer said.

“This training package is the first of its kind, and gives every educator in the Tasmanian early years workforce access to evidence-based resources and information.”

The modules are delivered online and are self-paced, allowing flexible access for educators who are managing the demands of busy ECEC environments.

Educators working in government, Independent and Catholic early years settings are all eligible to access the new training, which responds to a key recommendation from the Tasmanian Literacy Advisory Panel. The panel called for stronger professional learning opportunities aligned to the science of reading to be made available across the sector.

The training has been developed in collaboration with sector partners and quality assured by the University of Melbourne’s Research in Effective Education in Early Childhood Centre.
