Walliston Primary ECT the latest to embrace intergenerational learning
Walliston Primary School early childhood teacher (ECT) Katie Atterton is the latest early childhood professional to embrace the benefits of intergenerational learning for the children in her care, establishing a mutually beneficial agreement with a local aged care facility.
Ms Atterton, like many other professionals, was inspired by the ABC Television program Old People’s Home for 4 Year Olds, setting up the playgroup opportunity for her class of 24 students after receiving “overwhelming support” from her school’s principal and administration staff.
“The research that’s been conducted into intergenerational playgroups shows massive benefits and growths for both the children and the elderly participants,” Ms Atterton said.
“I was anticipating that I would have to contact a few before I could find one that would be keen, but they got back to me straight away and said they loved the idea.”
For aged care resident and playgroup participant Gail, the program has been a godsend, and she says she “cannot wait” to return home after every playgroup session to talk to her husband about the experience.
Ms Atterton said that she has seen such growth in the social and emotional development of her students, who have shown more empathy and compassion since being involved in the program.
“Even their vocabulary; interacting with an adult from a different generation really helps to expand and challenge their thinking and deepen their understanding,” she said.
The program also promotes positive mental health for both parties.
With families working full-time, Ms Atterton acknowledges that the amount of one-on-one time children have with adults is declining, and the same goes for aged-care residents.
At 102 years of age, Francis can attest to this.
“We love coming, how refreshing it is, how young and full of beans (the children are),” she said.
