Balnarring Preschool recognised for Reconciliation efforts
Reconciliation Victoria and the Victorian Local Governance Association have recognised the work of Balnarring Preschool in the 2020 HART Awards, held Friday 5 June.
The HART Awards (Helping Achieve Reconciliation Together) celebrate and honour the efforts of local governments and community groups across Victoria to progress reconciliation in their communities, and have been run since 2014.
“Each year we see more people engaged in reconciliation activities,” a spokesperson for the Awards said, saying the diversity of approaches adopted across the state was inspiring.
“In sharing these stories, we shine a light on the local initiatives and champions who are making a real difference in their communities and workplaces, so that others might take ideas and inspiration forward,” the spokesperson added.
The HART Awards are delivered as a partnership between Reconciliation Victoria and the Victorian Local Governance Association and supported by Bank Australia and Local Government Victoria.
Balnarring Preschool were awarded for their Living and Learning with Country, pedagogy and practice initiative, which is outlined here. As an Excellent rated service, having been recognised in 2017 for their innovative practice, the educators and leaders of Balnarring have a strong commitment to acknowledging that they live and learn on Boon Wurrung Country and celebrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives and culture through the values, beliefs and practices embraced at the service.
The Bundjil’s Nest Project is one example of the way in which Balnarring demonstrates a strong collaborative partnership with two local Elders to facilitate ongoing learning, share knowledge and experience about the culture of Boon Wurrung and its traditions.
