New preschool animation HexVets and Magic Pets set to bring friendship, care and magical creatures to young audiences

A new preschool animated series centred on friendship, compassion and caring for animals is set to premiere for young audiences later this year, with HexVets and Magic Pets positioning itself as one of Nickelodeon’s newest preschool offerings focused on social-emotional learning and imaginative storytelling.
Based on the popular HexVet graphic novel series by cartoonist Sam Davies, the animated adaptation follows two young witches, Annette and Clarion, as they train to become magical veterinarians under the guidance of Dr Talon, caring for a wide range of fantastical creatures while navigating friendship, teamwork and personal growth.
The series combines CG animation with 2D visual elements and has been developed as a 20-episode preschool adventure-comedy. According to information released by Nickelodeon and BOOM! Studios, the program explores themes of perseverance, empathy, problem solving and celebrating differences through a fantasy-based world designed for younger viewers.
The announcement reflects a broader trend across children's television, where many newer preschool programs are increasingly incorporating social-emotional learning themes alongside entertainment and storytelling.
In HexVets and Magic Pets, the central characters are described as unlikely friends with very different personalities who learn to work together while helping magical animals facing a variety of challenges. The creators have indicated that themes of kindness, resilience and collaboration sit at the centre of the series.
These themes continue to align closely with priorities seen across early childhood education and care (ECEC), where educators often support children in developing emotional regulation, relationship skills, empathy and problem-solving capabilities through play-based learning experiences.
The series also highlights the ongoing popularity of fantasy-based storytelling within children's media.
Through magical creatures, imaginative settings and adventure-driven narratives, programs such as HexVets and Magic Pets seek to engage children's curiosity while creating opportunities to explore broader concepts including caring for others, responsibility and cooperation.
Many early childhood researchers have long highlighted the role imaginative play and fantasy can have in supporting creativity, storytelling, communication and social development during the early years.
While children's television is primarily designed as entertainment, educational specialists frequently note that programs incorporating positive social messages can help reinforce concepts children are also exploring through play, relationships and learning environments.
The original HexVet graphic novels first launched in 2018 through BOOM! Studios' KaBOOM! imprint and have since been distributed internationally. The adaptation represents Nickelodeon's continued investment in preschool content based on established children's intellectual property and story worlds.
The television series has been developed by Nicole Dubuc, known for work across children's animation, with production involving Nickelodeon Animation and BOOM! Studios.
Industry reports indicate the program is expected to premiere during 2026, with international distribution planned across multiple markets.
The arrival of HexVets and Magic Pets comes as children's broadcasters and streaming platforms continue expanding investment in preschool programming that blends entertainment, storytelling and social-emotional learning themes.
Across the sector, educators and families are increasingly engaging with children's media that encourages curiosity, kindness, resilience and imaginative thinking alongside age-appropriate entertainment.
As preschool content continues to evolve, programs that combine fantasy adventure with relationship-based themes are likely to remain a popular part of the viewing landscape for young children and their families.
