Not all heroes wear capes: Chermside children honour firefighters on National Superhero Day

Look, there’s a bird. There’s a plane. No, it’s Chermside’s real-life superheroes.
Children at Chermside Early Education Centre swapped capes for firefighter gear on National Superhero Day, marching out to welcome the Queensland Fire Department in a special tribute to our real-life heroes.
With bright eyes and plenty of excitement, the children greeted their heroes in full dress-up costumes, meeting the firefighters behind the uniforms and enjoyed a morning that had leapt from the comic book pages into real life.
Chermside Early Education Centre’s Nominated Supervisor Shani Cai said the visit was a fun and memorable way for children to celebrate the everyday heroes in our community.
“For children it’s good to understand superheroes are not just found in comic books or on screens. They are the real people who show bravery, help others and make a difference every day,” Ms Cai said.
“The children absolutely loved dressing up as the firefighters and getting to experience the truck up close. It was a lovely way to celebrate National Superhero Day and create a core memory.”

Firefighters from the Chermside Fire Station also shared simple safety messages including what to do in an emergency and the important role firefighters play in keeping the community safe.
Ms Cai said the safety component created a learning experience that would be remembered long after the day ended.
“Moments like this capture children’s attention in such a genuine way,” she said.
“They were excited, engaged and completely immersed in the experience, and that is when the best learning happens.”
Queensland Childcare Services (QCCS) shared that the day was a special reminder that, for children, heroes are the people who show up, help others, and make their world feel fun, safe, and full of wonder.
“While it may not have been the Batmobile pulling in, seeing the fire truck arrive was every bit as exciting.”
