Blairmount Kids Learning Academy takes a lead on childcare safety with AI-powered supervision 

Blairmount Kids Learning Academy is participating in the Australian  Government's National CCTV Assessment Program following its integration of an AI-based  solution from Safe-Sight.ai, aimed at strengthening supervision and safety within its centres. 

Owner and Operator Krishna Annamalai said the centre saw an opportunity to use its existing CCTV  infrastructure differently, shifting from reviewing incidents after the fact to supporting real-time  awareness and early intervention. 

“Leadership in childcare is not just about reacting after incidents occur,” Ms Annamalai said. “Safe Sight.ai helps us capture the critical moments that matter most, enhancing supervision, monitoring entry  and exit points, and ensuring emergency pathways remain clear. If a child moves too close to an exit  or something blocks an emergency pathway, I get an alert and can immediately direct an educator to  respond.” 

Addressing the Supervision Gap 

Even the best educators can’t be everywhere at once, and transitions are when the risk is highest.  Children’s natural curiosity means incidents can happen quickly, even under close supervision. 

“Educators are often supervising multiple children at once, with attention constantly shifting during drop off, pick-up, and room changes,” Ms Annamalai said. “Safe-Sight.ai is designed to provide additional  visibility and support. The data also highlights where design or process improvements will have the  greatest impact, directly informing staffing and supervision models.” 

The solution works by identifying and alerting staff to specific scenarios that may require attention,  including: 

• children moving towards exit points or unsupervised areas 

• unauthorised entry into the premises 

• use of personal devices in supervision areas 

• temporary gaps in supervision during transitions 

Blairmount worked closely with Safe-Sight.ai to design the system around the specific needs of the  centre, ensuring it supports the way educators work without adding complexity to their day. 

The system operates without facial recognition and does not store continuous CCTV footage. It focuses  on identifying events and generating alerts, with options such as face blurring available, allowing the  centre to enhance safety while remaining aligned with privacy expectations of educators and families. 

Blairmount is also participating in the Australian Government’s National CCTV Assessment Program  (Schedule 5), providing feedback on how AI-based solutions can complement existing practices and  identify risks not always visible in real time.
