Minimum retention payment rates to take effect from 1 December 2025
Early childhood educators and teachers in eligible settings will benefit from updated minimum retention payments from 1 December 2025, as part of ongoing workforce support measures.
The updated rates apply to eligible educators and teachers employed under the Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) Retention Program, a targeted initiative designed to strengthen workforce stability and acknowledge the critical role educators play in the early years.
From December, eligible educators will receive a minimum retention payment of $1,250, while early childhood teachers (ECTs) will be entitled to $2,000. These payments are made annually and are aimed at encouraging ongoing employment and professional commitment in long day care, family day care and other approved early learning environments.
To receive the payment, educators and ECTs must meet specific eligibility criteria, including continuous employment with the same approved provider for the qualifying period and active engagement in delivering or supporting early childhood education and care.
The updated minimum rates reflect current sector priorities around workforce retention, particularly in the face of rising demand, evolving qualifications requirements and broader cost-of-living pressures.
This adjustment follows previous announcements by state and territory governments, working in partnership with the Commonwealth, to improve the sustainability and attractiveness of careers in early learning.
Retention payments are expected to continue playing a key role in supporting educator wellbeing, recognising the specialised knowledge and dedication required in the profession, and reducing turnover across services.
