National child safety training in development: Sector feedback now open

A new nationally consistent child safety training program is being developed for early childhood education and care (ECEC) professionals, with sector input now being sought through a national survey and series of targeted workshops.

Led by the Australian Centre for Child Protection in partnership with the Queensland Department of Education and other government agencies, the training will be mandatory for the ECEC sector and aims to strengthen workforce capability and create safer environments for children.

The training will be designed to reflect the diverse roles across the sector from centre managers and educational leaders to educators, support staff and volunteers.

To ensure the training meets the real-world needs of those working with and for children, sector professionals are invited to participate in one of two consultation opportunities:

Complete the national survey – approximately 20 minutes to provide valuable insights that will shape the content and delivery of the training.
Join an online workshop – limited spaces are available in six targeted sessions running from 1–9 October 2025.

Two streams are available:

Stream 1 – for managers and leaders (3 sessions)
Stream 2 – for teachers, educators, support staff and volunteers (3 sessions)

Both the survey and workshops provide opportunities for ECEC professionals to share feedback on what they need to feel confident, capable and supported in keeping children safe.

This national training initiative forms part of broader reforms to strengthen child safety and wellbeing in early childhood education, including those being led by the Queensland Government. These reforms support the National Principles for Child Safe Organisations and reflect a system-wide commitment to embedding child-centred practices.
