Strathpine University Hub opens, boosting ECEC study access for outer metro learners

A new university study hub in Brisbane’s northern suburbs is expected to improve access to higher education for future early childhood educators and others balancing work, family and study.

The Strathpine University Hub was officially opened over the weekend by Minister for Education Jason Clare, alongside Member-Elect for Dickson Ali France, Queensland Shadow Assistant Minister for Education Jess Pugh, and The BUSY Group.

The Hub is the first of its kind in Queensland’s outer metropolitan areas and forms part of the Australian Government’s expansion of Suburban University Study Hubs – a model that has already increased participation in regional communities.

Mr Clare said the initiative is about bringing study opportunities closer to home, helping people pursue meaningful careers without the barrier of travel or relocation.

“You’ll be able to do almost any degree at any university in the country right here,” he said. “And it’s just going to make it easier for people to do what they want and to build the careers that they want.”

For the early childhood education and care (ECEC) sector, the new Hub could help more learners take up study while continuing to work or raise children. Ms Pugh, who has a personal connection to the sector, highlighted the value of programs that support vocational engagement from an early age.

“My daughter, Alegra, is 15 years old and she’s just started studying early childhood education one day a week,” she said. “This kind of program gives kids like her the opportunity to stay engaged and keep their options open – whether that’s a TAFE qualification, a diploma or an education degree.”

The BUSY Group, which delivers programs for disengaged or marginalised learners, will operate the Strathpine site. CEO Paul Miles said the model is well aligned with BUSY’s mission.

“Our school is here because not enough young people complete an education, and not enough people are going into higher education in this community,” Mr Miles said. “We truly hope we can make a difference.”

The Strathpine site is one of 15 new Hubs planned for outer metropolitan areas nationally, with additional regional locations also in development as part of the Federal Government’s response to the Universities Accord.
