Volunteers like Maureen are a vital part of the ECEC sector
For many early childhood education and care (ECEC) services, networks of volunteers make the work they do with and for children and families a little easier, while for the volunteers themselves, the experience of giving back and being connected to community is a rewarding one.
At MercyCare Early Learning Ellenbrook volunteer Maureen has found fulfilment and a sense of purpose through her role, which sees her supporting the dedicated employees of the service with activities, meals, naptime and “everything in between.”
Volunteering, she shared recently, has been one of the most rewarding experiences of her life, allowing her to build on her past experiences of being with children, and helping her to gain a sense of belonging and increased confidence.
However, her primary role (and joy) lies in interacting with the children. She enjoys learning about the children’s interests and actively engaging in their world, bringing out her own inner child at the same time.
Her favourite time of her volunteering day is during afternoon tea, where she says that seeing the children get “so excited over something as simple as a plate of fruit and cake” is heartwarming.
Their genuine happiness and delight are contagious and Maureen finds a great deal of satisfaction in seeing her efforts making a real difference in their lives.
Her approach to volunteering reflects her philosophy on life: if you want to do something, then do it. The only barriers are the ones we create ourselves, and the only thing stopping you, is yourself.
