Specialised training for women to be social media safe at work

Specialised training has been developed to support women to be able to use social media safely in the context of their working lives to communicate effectively, make connections, increase the reach of their voice, develop their profile and strengthen their reputation.
The training has been developed to combat the challenges women face interacting online, because they are more likely than men to be targets of online abuse. It also provides an opportunity to advance gender equality, so all women are empowered to make choices about how they engage online.
The Women In The Spotlight (WITS) program offers social media self-defence training and teaches women how to use tech tools to manage their social media safely, report online abuse and protect their own wellbeing.
Research has shown that some women have avoided social media or stopped using it because of online abuse, and the self-defence training aims to help women raise their voices instead of being silenced.
Specifically the self-defence training covers:
- How to recognise online abuse and the impact it has on women’s working lives.
- How to set up social media accounts and profiles with safety in mind.
- How to deal with online abuse through reporting and protecting wellbeing. This includes information on the practical role eSafety has in safeguarding Australians from online harm.
Two types of social media self-defence training are offered – one for organisations and also regular webinars for the general public.
Social media self-defence training for organisations
Free 1- to 1.5-hour sessions are available for organisations in many sectors and industries, including early childhood education and care (ECEC). The session is delivered exclusively to each workplace and tailored to the relevant sector or industry. These sessions can be in person, or online via webinar.
