ACCC issues further reminder over bouncers for babies after more than 100 US deaths

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has revived its 2019 warnings about the Fisher-Price Rock ‘N Play Sleeper and the Kids II Rocking Sleeper models sold in Australia and voluntarily recalled after the product has been linked to more than 100 fatalities in the US.

Recalls for both products were undertaken when reports came in that infants had rolled from their back to their stomach or side while unrestrained, “or under other circumstances,” the commission said.

“Baby bouncers, rockers and recliners can be potentially deadly for infants, and the public health advice remains for infants to sleep on a flat, firm surface without pillows or bumpers,” added ACCC Deputy Chair Delia Rickard.

Since the initial recall, approximately 70 additional fatalities have been reported. The ACCC says the recall for the Fisher Price sleeper is ongoing in Australia and added that addressing and minimising the risks of these products is a high priority this year.

“Consumers who own this product should stop using it immediately and contact Mattel via the details in the recall notice to arrange a refund and instructions to make it unusable,” an ACCC spokesperson said.

“Implementing strategies to prevent infant injuries and deaths caused by inclined products used for sleep and addressing product safety issues for young children, are priorities for the ACCC this year.”

“We are looking for feedback about these products to address the risks of injury and death.”
