Journey Early Learning rolls out ‘Future Foodies’ program to set children up for life
Early childhood education and care (ECEC) provider Journey Early Learning is rolling out a new food program across its network of more than thirty services with the aim of “setting the course for a balanced diet for children.”
Founders Ryan Meldrum and Anthony Smith said the name of the program indicates the impact they hope it will have, saying that the love of good, healthy food is something that is going to accompany children throughout their lives.
Designed by nutrition specialist Teri Lichtenstein, the program aims to take the existing role that good nutrition plays in Journey services to “a whole new level.” Ms Lichtenstein has over 25 years experience in the allied health field, and was a board member of Nutrition Australia from 2017 to 2021. As a mother of two, she understands the importance of developing good eating habits at a young age.
“It’s about keeping it real and focusing not only on nutrition but also on taste, novelty and inclusion,” she said.
Mr Meldrum describes himself as a “foodie” and wants children to come to realise that food “is about so much more than just nutrition.”
Future Foodies at a glance:
– Menus specially developed by an experienced nutritionist.
– Fresh, seasonal and healthy produce
– Expansion of the children’s palate with herbs and spices
– Feedback from children and chefs actively incorporated into the menus
– Tailor-made menus to suit individual needs (allergies, intolerances)
– Holistic approach to food
– Food is part of the curriculum and integrated into learning through play
