EYPC in Port Augusta to close after 14 years of serving the community

The Early Years Parenting Centre (EYPC) in South Australia’s Port Augusta will close just before Christmas after 14 years of serving the community.

A number of parenting and child services, like local playgroups and drop-in parenting support are hosted by the EYPC, which also serves as a base for social workers and nurses working for the local Child and Family Health Service (CAFHS). Until recently, the centre also provided early childhood immunisations.

Families in the area who spoke with the ABC about the closure said the EYPC has been a “one stop shop”, especially for families who travel in to access the services from the remote South Australian areas of Roxby Downs and Coober Pedy.

SA Health told the ABC the closure was due to the centre “no longer [meeting] the parameters of the Commonwealth’s direction for community-based early childhood service models”.

The centre will close on December 20 and services previously offered by the centre will be spread amongst existing services in Port Augusta.
