The purpose of this workshop is to explore and understand the nature of intellectual impairment, and to examine the impact it has on the lives of people, and its implications for those who support them. This crucial subject is seldom directly addressed in formal courses, though many assumptions abound about how an intellectual disability influences the day to day support of people. In addition to examining some of (what might be termed) challenges in having an intellectual impairment, we will also examine some of the assets that people have but which are often not recognised.

The importance of valued social roles will be considered, and how positive roles can be supported and developed.
