Could you squash a plastic bottle without ever touching it? Or break a ruler with a single sheet of newspaper? Come along to this much-loved Air Workshop to explore why air is so much more than ‘nothing’ and dive into the fascinating pedagogical topic: metacognition in early childhood.
STEM topic: AirIn this hands-on, interactive workshop, you will learn how to create rich STEM learning experiences in your service through the exciting topic of air and use it as a topic through which to teach the outcomes of the Early Years Learning Framework. Activities may include:
- Use air to submerge a submarine and bring it back to the surface.
- Try to blow up a balloon with a plastic bottle and then transport the balloon inside that same bottle.
- Catch as much air as possible in a soap bubble.
- Explore the differences between hot and cold air and how you can feel and hear air.
- Test how well a round object and an angular object prevent a tea light from being extinguished.
- Try to move objects, paint, and even odours using air.
- Catch, trap and make air visible.
- Find out the fastest way to empty a full bottle of water.
- Find a way to measure the volume of the air we breathe.

The Program
The program will be divided into four distinct segments each coordinated and delivered by ECEC specialists that really understand the right questions to ask at the right time and will be on hand to facilitate extended audience questions too.

About the venue

Lightspace, 30 Light Street (corner Scanlan) Fortitude Valley Brisbane QLD 4006.
The entrance to the venue is via Scanlan Street, the entrance to the Studios is on Light Street. In the hub of Brisbane’s creative district, Lightspace is only a short scoot from the Valley, New Farm and the CBD. The easiest way to find Lightspace is to turn left at the Audi dealership across from The Emporium on Wickham St. This is Light St, which you should follow all the way to the end.
Outside of normal business hours there is usually plenty of free street parking available in Scanlan and Prospect Streets. During normal business hours there are metered and free street parks however it can be quite congested. The nearest parking stations are at the Homemaker Centre (4 mins walk – rates here) and the RNA Showgrounds (10 mins walk). As an inner city venue we highly recommend public transport, taxis or Uber.
