Local collaboration helps foster a love of reading in Albany childrenh capability, national report finds

The Y WA Albany Early Learning Centre (ELC) partnered with the City of Albany Public Library to bring an interactive story time session directly to young children as part of a new collaboration focused on nurturing a love of books, language and learning.

The partnership supports the Y WA’s School ReadY Program, which is being implemented across the organisation’s ELCs throughout Western Australia and includes a strong focus on literacy and language development.

Through School ReadY, children are exposed to intentional learning experiences, carefully selected books, songs and hands-on, play-based activities designed to promote and enhance important language and early literacy skills.

The partnership with the City of Albany Public Library extends this learning beyond the centre’s regular program, as they welcomed a library professional into the ELC to share their passion for stories, books and language through a fun and engaging experience that reinforced the skills and concepts children are already learning.

Library Officer Tara McCready visited the centre to deliver an interactive story session with the Kindy room, and another Library officer will soon visit to engage with the Toddler room.

“The Albany Public Library runs some amazing programs for young children, and being able to bring these direct to the centre is another wonderful way for children to be exposed to the world of language and books,” Ms McCready said.

Michelle Burns, Director of the Y WA Albany ELC, said the children had been excited and immediately engaged by the new story time experiences.

“The children were so excited when Tara arrived and were immediately engaged throughout the entire session, thoroughly enjoying listening to the stories, joining in with the activities and sharing in the experience,” Ms Burns said.

“There is something truly special about having someone from the wider community come into the centre and share their passion for stories and books with the children. These experiences create a real sense of excitement and wonder, while encouraging children to develop a genuine love of reading, storytelling and learning.”

The partnership also aims to strengthen connections between young families and one of Albany’s important community hubs, introducing children to the library and the range of early years programs and services it provides.

Ms Burns added, “It is wonderful to partner with the City of Albany Public Library, adding value to our School ReadY Program, and we hope to continue the partnership on an annual basis.” 

Through the collaboration, the Y WA hopes to continue nurturing children’s curiosity and love of learning, inspiring them to keep reading, singing, exploring and discovering the wonderful world of books and stories.
