The Professional Educator Workshop: setting diploma trainees up for success

As Australia’s early childhood education and care (ECEC) sector continues to evolve, the need for strong professional identity, clear career pathways and high-quality training has never been more important.

In response, the TAFE SA Centre of Excellence in Early Childhood Education and Care is piloting a new traineeship model designed to strengthen the foundations of the future workforce, with The Professional Educator Workshop sitting at the heart of the approach.

The Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care (CHC50125) traineeship model is being delivered across TAFE SA childcare centres in partnership with the TAFE SA Children’s Education and Care program team.

According to TAFE SA, the flexible model reflects the needs of the sector and aligns with innovative practices emerging across the National TAFE Network, as identified through the Centre of Excellence’s Diploma Traineeship Uptake Enquiry.

One of the strongest findings from the enquiry was the need for structured, early support that helps trainees understand their role, build confidence and see a clear pathway ahead.

The Professional Educator Workshop was developed in direct response to this evidence.

A foundation for professional identity

The workshop is a two-day learning experience undertaken at the very start of the traineeship. It is designed to orient diploma-enrolled students to their role, strengthen their understanding of the qualification, and build the mindset needed for long-term success in the sector.

The workshop and accompanying resources support learners to:

• understand the scope and expectations of the diploma qualification
• recognise differences in job roles and responsibilities across the ECEC environment
• appreciate the value of professional identity and leadership
• be inspired to pursue further qualifications and leadership pathways
• align their practice with the National Quality Framework

This early investment in professional identity is important. For many trainees, entering the ECEC workforce is not only the beginning of employment, but the start of a professional journey that can lead to leadership, mentoring, educational leadership, service management or further study.

Building confidence from day one

The Professional Educator Workshop creates a reflective and supportive space where trainees can explore what it means to be an educator, not just an employee.

Through guided reflection, discussion and practical activities, trainees are encouraged to see themselves as emerging professionals who contribute to quality outcomes for children, families and communities.

This focus on identity and purpose can help trainees:

• feel more confident in their role
• understand how their work connects to the NQF
• build a stronger sense of belonging within the profession
• develop motivation to continue learning and progressing
• recognise the broader value of their contribution to children and families

The approach also reflects the broader purpose of the Centre of Excellence, which was established under the National Skills Agreement to support best-practice teaching, learning and workforce development in areas of national priority.

Supporting a stronger future workforce

At a time when the ECEC sector continues to navigate workforce shortages, increasing complexity and growing expectations around quality, initiatives that strengthen capability and confidence at the beginning of a learner’s journey are critical.

The Centre of Excellence will continue to evaluate the new traineeship model and the impact of The Professional Educator Workshop on learner engagement, retention and progression.

Early feedback indicates that trainees value the clarity, confidence and sense of direction the workshop provides.

As the pilot progresses, updates on the evaluation will be shared, offering further insight into how structured early support can help build a more confident, capable and connected ECEC workforce.
