Double Win for MacKillop at the Victorian Protecting Children Awards

MacKillop Family Services is delighted to celebrate two award winners at this year's Victorian Protecting Children Awards, announced on Thursday 3 September.

The awards recognise the outstanding contributions of individuals and teams working to improve the safety and wellbeing of children, young people and families across the state.

Esmai Manahan, MacKillop's National Director, Nanyubak Unit, received the Walda Blow Aboriginal Children and Young People Award, which recognises significant contributions to the safety and
wellbeing of Aboriginal children and young people.

A proud Yorta Yorta and Gunditjmara woman, Aunty Esmai was recognised for her leadership in strengthening culturally responsive practice at MacKillop.

She has championed Aboriginal Family-Led Decision Making and supported Aboriginal children and young people to remain connected to family, culture and community. In the past year, Aunty Esmai and her team have facilitated eight family reunifications for First Nations children and young people. Her advocacy, leadership and commitment to self-determination have driven meaningful change for Aboriginal families.

She has also led a process of truth-telling at MacKillop that has strengthened staff cultural knowledge and embedded culturally responsive practice across the organisation.

MacKillop's second award of the evening went to newly retired Group Director Graham Boal, who received the Leaving a Legacy Award.

Mr Boal was honoured for his 37 years of experience and deep knowledge of the care services sector.  He was frequently called on by sector leaders to advise on decisions regarding funding and service agreements. He played a critical role in the repricing of residential care in 2003, home-based care in 2006, and family services in 2009. He is acknowledged for his compassion for children and families, and his commitment to mentoring future leaders.

MacKillop Family Services CEO Dr Robyn Miller AM said the awards highlighted the exceptional work being undertaken across the organisation every day.

"The quality of nominations this year highlights the exceptional work taking place within MacKillop and across the sector. They reflect our shared commitment to delivering the highest standards of care, support and advocacy for children, young people and families. Aunty Esmai and Graham are such worthy recipients, and I am delighted that they have been acknowledged with these awards.

"I also congratulate every winner, finalist and nominee in this year’s Awards and thank them for the difference they make every day."
