Bethania educator recognised after 23 years of service

Bethania Early Education Centre Nominated Supervisor and centre manager Bernie Missen has marked 23 years as an early childhood educator at the service.
Ms Missen was also recognised with the Wonderful Women of Waterford Community Award from Queensland Childcare Services (QCCS).
QCCS acknowledged her contribution to the local Waterford community, including providing food hampers, supporting people experiencing homelessness, and connecting families with services such as the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) and occupational therapy.
Diagnosed with dyslexia during her school years, Ms Missen said her experience has shaped her approach to inclusive education and supporting diverse learning styles.
“At Bethania we have adapted our learning approach to accommodate all learners, from visual and auditory learners to those who prefer more structured approaches,” she said.
“Care, consideration and a patient approach to a child’s learning journey helps build relationships focused on wellbeing and growth.”
Ms Missen said her 23-year career with QCCS has provided opportunities to support children in a nurturing environment where they can grow and develop.
“I’ve been very fortunate to form close relationships with staff, families and children throughout my time, which has strengthened my passion for early childhood education,” she said.
“I’ve found that children respond best to an approachable and nurturing environment, which supports their confidence and sense of self.
“The most rewarding part of my career has been supporting children to explore their interests, strengths and passions.”
Ms Missen began her career at Bethania Early Education Centre as a trainee in 2003 while completing a Certificate III in Children’s Services. She later completed a Diploma in 2005, an Advanced Diploma in 2008, further TAFE qualifications in 2011, and an Advanced Diploma of Community Sector Management in 2018.
Queensland Childcare Services employs more than 800 educators and team members and focuses on delivering hands-on, play-based learning experiences for children.
