Global leadership change at Busy Bees

May 23, 2025

Busy Bees, one of the world’s largest early childhood education and care (ECEC) providers, has announced a significant leadership transition at the global level. After more than 25 years with the organisation, Group CEO Simon Irons will step down from his role in July 2025, marking the end of an era that has seen Busy Bees expand from a small group of nurseries in the UK into a global force in early education including here in Australia.

Busy Bees Australia operates more than 90 centres across the country.  The organisation entered the Australian market in 2018 known for its investment in purpose-built learning environments.

Busy Bees is majority-owned by two major international investors: the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan (Canada) and Temasek, a global investment company based in Singapore. These long-term institutional stakeholders bring stability and support to Busy Bees’ growth and quality agenda across all markets.

Simon Irons joined Busy Bees in 2000 under his leadership, the organisation now operates in over ten countries.

From 8 July 2025, Peter Gowers will take over as Group CEO. Mr Gowers brings more than 30 years of leadership experience, including senior roles with Europcar, Travelodge and InterContinental Hotels Group. A structured transition is already underway to support a smooth handover.

Peter said of his appointment:

“Simon’s leadership has shaped Busy Bees into what it is today, a trusted, forward-thinking childcare provider focused on giving every child the best start in life. I’m looking forward to continuing that journey, staying true to our values while also embracing innovation and opportunity.”

While these leadership changes are occurring at a global level, their impact will undoubtedly be felt in Australia. The country remains a key market in Busy Bees’ international portfolio.
