Queensland Government expands investment in early learning access

The Queensland Government has announced investment to deliver new early learning programs across the state, with a focus on supporting families and children who face barriers to accessing kindergarten. The initiative aims to ensure more children are developmentally on track by the time they start school, aligning with the state’s commitment to equitable access and quality outcomes in early childhood education.

Announced on 3 December 2025, the programs will begin rolling out in 2026, following a co-design process with families, early childhood professionals, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, and community organisations. The funding will target locations where there are gaps in kindergarten participation, particularly among families experiencing vulnerability or disadvantage. The programs are designed to complement, not duplicate, the state’s free kindy initiative, which commenced earlier in 2024. Two new State delivered kindergartens will be established at Mutarnee State School (North Queensland) and Irvinebank State School (Far North Queensland), forming part of the broader rollout. Each initiative will be locally designed, drawing on community strengths to support children’s early development and transition to formal schooling. This targeted investment forms part of the broader Early Years Strategy and reflects the Queensland Government’s commitment to closing participation gaps, improving developmental outcomes, and ensuring that early childhood services are inclusive and accessible. For ECEC providers and professionals, the announcement presents opportunities to engage in co-design, strengthen partnerships with families, and innovate service delivery to meet the needs of children who may otherwise miss out on quality early learning.
