Milieu Early Education and Care marks World Environment Day with community-focused excursion

In celebration of World Environment Day, Milieu Early Education and Care designed a meaningful and memorable excursion that blended environmental awareness, cultural learning and life skills engaging children while strengthening connections with the local community.

Stepping away from the traditional bushwalk or nature play, the children instead visited a local pet shop, where they explored a variety of animals and engaged in conversations with the shop owner about the environmental factors affecting animals’ wellbeing. These interactions sparked rich discussions about habitat protection, sustainability and how humans can act as responsible stewards of the Earth.

During the visit, children also purchased food for the chickens back at their service. They were involved in every step reading packaging, measuring quantities, and completing the transaction building real-world literacy, numeracy and social skills. They practised turn-taking, problem-solving and grew in confidence as active participants in their community.

To round out the experience, the children visited a local café for a babyccino, using coins to pay and exploring the concept of money through hands-on learning. The excursion concluded with a nutritious lunch at a nearby Turkish restaurant, where children tasted food from another culture and reflected on diversity, nutrition and inclusion in a way that supported Milieu’s Munch & Move-approved multicultural menu.

Milieu Early Education and Care takes pride in its innovative approach to excursions. Founder and owner Daniela Silicato is committed to creating rich, real-world learning opportunities that extend beyond the classroom. Thorough risk assessments, careful planning and appropriate staff-to-child ratios ensured the safety and wellbeing of all participants throughout the day.

Feedback from families was overwhelmingly positive, with many parents commenting on the depth of learning their children brought home from environmental stewardship to cultural appreciation.

This World Environment Day excursion offered more than just a change of scenery it was a vibrant example of how early childhood education can be dynamic, community-connected and deeply enriching.
