Tasmania opens EOI process for early learning services on school sites

The Tasmanian Government is inviting early childhood education and care (ECEC) providers to express interest in establishing services on surplus land next to government schools, as part of a plan to expand access to early learning across the state.

Expressions of interest (EOIs) are now open for ECEC organisations looking to partner with the state to deliver new services on government-owned land near public schools. The initiative is part of the Government’s 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future, designed to support families and meet growing demand for care and education.

Minister for Education Jo Palmer said the program reflects the Government’s commitment to children and families in the early years.

“The ECEC sector plays a critical role in supporting children and their families during the formative early years of a child’s life,” she said.

“We want to make it easier for providers to expand where the need is greatest, particularly in school communities where families already travel for learning.”

A call for sector feedback

The Government is also seeking feedback from providers on potential sites and the proposed conditions for land use. Sector insight will help shape how the program is rolled out, and where investment should be focused.

“This is not just a call for submissions,” Minister Palmer said. “We want to understand which locations are viable, what challenges providers face, and how we can support meaningful partnerships.”

The opportunity is open to approved providers of long day care, preschool, family day care coordination and outside school hours care.

Expanding access for Tasmanian families

The land release follows a statewide audit of surplus government property, focused on unlocking new space for early learning. The goal is to increase availability and support families to find care closer to home.

“We are focused on giving children the best possible start in life and learning, no matter where they live or what their family circumstances may be,” Minister Palmer said.

The EOI process will close on 20 June 2025. For more information, including site details and application guidelines, visit the Department for Education, Children and Young People website.
