Archetypal Play: connecting core concepts in Child-Parent Psychotherapy

We are delighted to partner with Dr Chandra Ghosh Ippen, Ph.D. (USA) who will be presenting two webinars as part of the 2024 Infant Mental Health & Wellbeing Training Series.

 

The Infant Mental Health & Wellbeing Series, is a series of webinars and in-person workshops with a focus on infants, and their parents or caregivers who are at risk or otherwise vulnerable due to family adversity, violence and trauma.

 

Participants will gain an increased knowledge of infant mental health and the impact of adversity and trauma on infant and parent/caregiver development. Sessions will introduce those working with at-risk infants to ways in which they can intervene with infants and their parents/caregivers to support them to recover and thrive within their relationships.

 

Dr. Chandra Ghosh Ippen Chandra Ghosh Ippen is an award-winning children’s book author and child psychologist with over 30 years of experience conducting clinical work, research, and training in the area of early childhood trauma and diversity-informed practice. She is a co-developer of Child-Parent Psychotherapy and Associate Director of the Child Trauma Research Program at the University of California, San Francisco.

 

Overview

Projective identification, Freud’s calamities of childhood, ruptures in protection, fear in the absence of protection and connection, rebuilding the protective shield, the window of tolerance; these are core concepts that are critically important to those working in the field of early childhood trauma.

 

During this webinar, we will connect these concepts to young children’s play during Child-Parent Psychotherapy, and we will explore ways that we can partner with parents to help them understand and respond to what their children may be sharing and asking for through the modality of play.

 

Key learnings

Participants will be able to:

 

• Name the four calamities of childhood and recognise when they may show up as core themes in children’s play.
• Understand the concepts of projective identification and recognise how chaotic play that seems to have no logical meaning may be connected to this concept.
• Understand the concept of ruptures in protection and understand how revenge fantasy play may be connected to the concept.
• Define what is meant by a port of entry in CPP.
