Building respectful, inclusive learning communities: introducing the Social cohesion education hub

Creating learning environments where every child feels safe, respected and a genuine sense of belonging is fundamental to quality education. As Australia's communities become increasingly diverse, early childhood educators and teachers play an important role in helping children develop empathy, respect and the skills to navigate differences from the earliest years.
To support this work, the Social Cohesion Education Hub has been launched as a free national online resource for educators. Funded by the Australian Government Department of Education and developed by Education Services Australia (ESA), the Hub brings together high-quality, evidence-informed resources that promote inclusion, belonging and respectful relationships while helping educators address antisemitism, racism, discrimination and other behaviours that can undermine safe and inclusive learning environments.
Designed for educators across early childhood, primary and secondary education, the Hub provides practical resources, professional learning and guidance that can be readily incorporated into everyday teaching and learning.
The Social Cohesion Education Hub has been developed to strengthen educators' confidence in creating learning environments where diversity is recognised as a strength and every child feels welcomed, respected and valued.
The Hub supports educators to:
- strengthen respectful relationships and inclusive learning environments
- build understanding of diversity, identity and belonging
- address antisemitism, racism and discrimination through evidence-informed education
- support children and young people to recognise and challenge stereotypes and misinformation
- foster empathy, critical thinking and respectful dialogue
- build safe, connected learning communities where everyone feels they belong.
The platform complements existing wellbeing, inclusion and child safety initiatives already embedded across Australian education settings and aligns with the Australian Curriculum and broader educational frameworks.
Rather than creating new content, the Hub curates quality-assured resources from leading Australian and international organisations, giving educators a central location to discover trusted materials.
Featured resources include:
- Journeys of Hope – a collection of short films exploring the migration stories of Holocaust survivors while encouraging discussion around identity, belonging and resilience.
- Strategies to Counter Antisemitism in Schools – a UNESCO guide providing practical approaches to fostering respectful and inclusive learning environments.
- Countering Holocaust Denial and Distortion – structured learning materials designed to help students recognise misinformation and understand how prejudice develops.
- Together for Humanity Learning Modules – interactive resources exploring identity, diversity, stereotypes, resilience and respectful relationships.
Educators can search resources by education sector, age group, topic, curriculum area and learning focus, making it easier to identify materials suited to their own teaching context.
In addition to classroom resources, the Hub also includes professional learning materials that support educators to build confidence when facilitating conversations around identity, inclusion, diversity and respectful relationships.
While many of the resources extend across all stages of education, the principles underpinning the Hub are highly relevant to early childhood education and care.
The Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) V2.0 recognises that children's sense of identity, belonging and connectedness develops through responsive relationships and inclusive learning environments. Everyday interactions provide valuable opportunities for educators to model empathy, celebrate diversity and support children to develop respect for themselves and others.
The Hub complements this work by providing:
- age-appropriate resources that support inclusion and belonging
- guidance for responding to bias or exclusion
- practical strategies that encourage empathy and respectful relationships
- ideas for creating learning environments where every child feels valued and included
- professional learning that strengthens educators' confidence in addressing sensitive topics.
These approaches also align closely with the National Quality Framework's emphasis on children's wellbeing, respectful relationships, cultural responsiveness and inclusive practice.
Beyond supporting individual educators, the Social Cohesion Education Hub can assist leadership teams in strengthening whole-service approaches to inclusion and belonging.
Services can use the Hub to:
- support curriculum planning and reflective practice
- strengthen professional learning and educator capability
- facilitate meaningful conversations with children, families and colleagues
- build confidence in responding to discrimination, bias and exclusion
- reinforce existing child safety, wellbeing and inclusion strategies
- foster stronger partnerships with families and communities through respectful dialogue.
For many services, the Hub offers another practical resource that complements existing work already underway in quality improvement, cultural inclusion and community engagement.
The Social Cohesion Education Hub has been designed as a dynamic platform, with additional resources expected to be added over time as new evidence, research and educational priorities emerge.
As conversations around inclusion, diversity and social cohesion continue to evolve, the Hub aims to provide educators with current, practical and evidence-informed materials that support respectful learning communities across Australia.
For early childhood services, schools and education leaders, the Social Cohesion Education Hub represents another valuable professional resource that complements the Early Years Learning Framework, the Australian Curriculum, the National Quality Framework and existing wellbeing initiatives.
By bringing together free, quality-assured resources in one accessible location, the Hub supports educators to strengthen inclusive practice, foster respectful relationships and create learning environments where every child can develop a strong sense of identity, belonging and connection.
As the early childhood sector continues to place children's rights, agency and wellbeing at the centre of practice, resources such as the Social Cohesion Education Hub provide practical support for educators committed to building communities where diversity is celebrated and everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
