HELP debt reduction now available for very remote early childhood teachers

Early childhood teachers working in very remote Australian communities may be eligible for financial relief under the Higher Education Loan Program (HELP) Debt Reduction Program for Very Remote Teachers.

The initiative is designed to help attract, retain and sustain qualified teachers in communities where workforce shortages are most acute.

The program applies to eligible early childhood teachers working in centre-based day care or preschool settings and offers both indexation waivers and reductions to outstanding HELP debt.

Eligible early childhood teachers can apply for indexation waivers on their outstanding HELP debt, as well as reductions to their HELP debt based on completed service in very remote communities.

These measures are designed to make remote teaching roles more financially viable and recognise the challenges of delivering early learning in very remote locations.

Teachers may be eligible if they:

have completed an initial teaching qualification
are working as a teacher in a centre-based day care service or preschool
are employed in a very remote Australian community
had an outstanding HELP debt when they commenced their role
completed the required number of service days on or after 1 January 2019.

The program aims to increase the number of teachers working in very remote communities, support services to attract and retain qualified staff, strengthen continuity of education for children in remote areas and reduce financial barriers for teachers considering remote placements.

For approved providers operating in very remote regions, the program may provide a valuable incentive to support workforce stability and long-term staffing.

The Department of Education has published detailed guidance on eligibility, service requirements and how teachers can apply.
