2023 Early Childhood Learning and Development Sector Award winners announced

The winners of the inaugural Early Childhood Learning and Development Sector Awards were celebrated at Optus Stadium on Friday night, recognising and celebrating the contributions of outstanding educators and organisations in Western Australia. 

Eight award winners and 24 finalists were congratulated, chosen by an independent judging panel with respected sector experts who reviewed hundreds of nominations from a broad range of sector services including long day care, family day care, preschool, outside school hours care, and regional and remote services.

Child Australia coordinated the awards, working with partner organisations Goodstart Early Learning, REED, Ngala and The Y WA, who were supported by major sponsor BHP and other sector organisations Xplor, CTAS Education, Wanslea and Busy Bees.

Lee Peing Lim was named as the Outstanding Educator, with Rachael Baker taking the award for Rising Star. 

Rocky Beaton was recognised for Excellence in Leadership, Corrine Bell for Outstanding Indigenous Educator, and Lara Bowler as the Outstanding Early Childhood Teacher. 

Speech pathologist Sarah Mountford was named as the Outstanding Child Allied Health Practitioner, Pachamama Early Education and Childcare was recognised for Excellence in Innovative and Sustainable Practice, and in perhaps the most moving announcement of the night, West Pilbara Mobile Children’s Service were awarded for Excellence in Community Engagement or School Partnerships.

Finalists each received $500 with winners receiving an additional $1,000 prize.

“These new awards have recognised some truly outstanding individuals and organisations,” said WA Early Childhood Minister Sabine Winton.

“We know how important the early stages of a child’s life are. There’s so much evidence that a good start in life makes a huge positive difference down the track for the child and our community.”

Ms Winton acknowledged the huge role educators play in supporting young children’s development and growth, saying “it’s really important we recognise the amazing work they do”.

She congratulated all the nominees and winners, expressing “a huge thank you” to all the staff and services for the incredible work they do to make sure children are looked after and supported.
