Are you prepared for VIT’s digital registration cards for early childhood teachers?

From late 2025, the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) will stop issuing physical registration cards. This means all early childhood teachers (ECTs) across Victoria will transition to digital registration cards as the new standard for verifying their professional registration status.
The change forms part of VIT’s broader plan to modernise how teacher registration is managed making the process safer, simpler and more accessible for both teachers and employers.
The rollout began in November 2024, when initial teacher education (ITE) graduates granted registration or permission to teach (PTT) were first issued with both physical and digital registration cards.
Over this 12-month transition period, all registered teachers and early childhood teachers will receive digital cards alongside physical ones. However, by late 2025, VIT will move to a digital-only system, and physical cards will no longer be provided.
Importantly, the VIT public register will remain the official record of registration. Services can use it to check the real-time registration status of any staff member removing the need to rely on physical cards, which can become outdated or lost.
The transition supports real-time access to accurate information, increased security, and less administrative burden for services. It also aligns with broader digital credentialing trends being adopted across professional sectors.
What you need to know:
- Physical registration cards will be phased out by the end of 2025
- Digital cards are being gradually issued throughout 2025
- The VIT public register remains the definitive source for registration verification
- All services can verify staff credentials anytime via the VIT website
- The change promotes greater accuracy, security and convenience across the sector
To support the transition, VIT has published a comprehensive FAQ resources outlining key timelines, transition arrangements and how to access digital credentials.
