Senator Jonathon Duniam appointed Shadow Minister for Education and Early Learning

Liberal Senator Jonathon Duniam has been appointed Shadow Minister for Education and Early Learning, a portfolio that includes oversight of Australia’s early childhood education and care (ECEC) policy. His appointment signals a renewed focus on education standards and regional access as the Federal Opposition outlines its vision ahead of the next election.

Senator Duniam will retain his positions within the Shadow Cabinet and the Federal Opposition’s leadership team. He replaces Victorian Senator Sarah Henderson, who previously held the education and early learning portfolio in the Shadow Cabinet.

In a public statement, Senator Duniam acknowledged the significance of the appointment and outlined his focus on lifting educational standards and ensuring equitable access to quality learning across the country.

“A quality education is one of the most powerful gifts we can give,” Senator Duniam said. “Every student, from regional and remote Australia to our capital cities, deserves the opportunity to reach their potential.”

He also criticised the current Labor Government for what he described as a decline in national education outcomes, identifying this as a priority issue in his new role. He reiterated his commitment to representing Tasmania’s interests in Canberra and highlighted infrastructure and employment as key areas of concern.

“Labor’s record of seeking to shut down industries, and its lack of attention to funding in critical areas like infrastructure, are bad for the future of our state,” he said.

Senator Duniam’s appointment comes as early learning and education reform continue to gain national attention, with ongoing changes to funding and workforce policy under the Albanese Government. As Shadow Minister, he will be responsible for scrutinising these reforms and offering alternative policy positions ahead of the next federal election.

“It is now more important than ever to hold the Albanese Government to account,” he said. “We will offer a compelling vision and suite of policies that appeal to Australians.”

Universities Australia welcomed his appointment, noting a willingness to engage on key education issues in the lead-up to the next election.

Senator Duniam entered the Senate in 2016 and has previously held several ministerial and shadow ministerial portfolios, including Assistant Minister for Forestry and Fisheries and Assistant Minister for Regional Tourism. These roles have shaped his longstanding focus on regional development, which he has committed to continuing in the education space.
