Queensland children primed for disaster readiness with new online game
A new educational game, The Get Ready Queensland Challenge, was launched on Friday by Queensland Minister for Natural Disaster and Emergency Management, David Littleproud, and Queensland Treasurer and Minister for Infrastructure and Planning, Cameron Dick.
Designed to help Queensland children and their families prepare for future disasters and severe weather, the game is now available online and has been made possible by funding from the joint Commonwealth-Queensland Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA) through the Community Recovery Fund, which was established in the wake of the 2019 north and Far North Queensland monsoonal flooding event.
Mr Littleproud said that given Queensland’s history of significant natural disasters it was important children and their families knew what they needed to do to stay safe.
“We hope the game will provide a good prompt for families to begin discussing these important topics and start thinking about ways they can better prepare for future disasters,” he added.
Mr Dick said the game would communicate “important messages to children via a fun and engaging series of tasks, games and stories”.
“It will help children learn what they need to include in their ‘grab and go bag’ and their home emergency kit, and how their family can prepare their property for different extreme weather events,” he added.
The Get Ready Queensland Challenge can be accessed via desktop or mobile devices at getready.qld.gov.au/game.
