Batemans Bay Preschool Celebrates 50 Years of Early Learning Excellence

June 11, 2025

Batemans Bay Preschool recently celebrated its 50th anniversary, reflecting on five decades of dedication to early childhood education and its profound impact on the local community.

Established in 1975, Batemans Bay Preschool has been a cornerstone of early childhood education in the region. Over the years, it has provided a nurturing environment where countless children have taken their first steps into learning and social development.

The 50th anniversary celebration was a testament to the preschool’s enduring legacy. The event brought together past and present students, families, educators and community members to commemorate this significant milestone. Attendees enjoyed performances by the children, shared stories from the past, and participated in activities that highlighted the preschool’s journey over the years.

To gain deeper insight into the preschool’s evolution, philosophy and future vision, we asked Centre Manager Rebecca Lester the following:

Fiona: What have been the most significant changes in early childhood education that you’ve seen during your time at Batemans Bay Preschool?

Rebecca: For me, the biggest change has been how much more people now understand just how important early childhood education is for a child’s whole life. I’ve also noticed a real shift toward inclusion, with growing support for children of all backgrounds and abilities. Technology has definitely moved forward, but what’s stayed the same is the joy of watching children grow through play and the strong, loving relationships they form.”

Fiona: How has the preschool maintained its connection to the local community across five decades?

Rebecca: Our connection to this community runs deep we were started by local families and community organisations, and their influence is still at the heart of who we are today. We’re proud to work closely with our local Elders, and moments like singing our daily ‘Care for Country’ song remind us how important it is to honour culture, history, and the land we’re on. It means so much to see generations of the same families come through our doors that lasting bond is something we truly treasure.

Fiona: Looking ahead, what are your hopes and priorities for the preschool over the next 5 to 10 years?

Rebecca: Looking ahead, I really hope we can keep building on the strong foundation we’ve created, embedded in inclusion and deep community connections. We’ll keep focusing on sustainability, cultural learning, and working closely with families, because those relationships matter so much. What matters most to me, though, is that every child who comes through our gates feels like they truly belong and leaves with confidence, curiosity, and kindness in their heart.

The preschool’s commitment to fostering a supportive and inclusive environment has been instrumental in shaping the lives of many in the Batemans Bay area. Its emphasis on play-based learning and community involvement has set a standard for early childhood education in the region and is rated as Exceeding under the NationalQuality Framework.

As Batemans Bay Preschool looks to the future, it remains dedicated to its mission of providing quality early learning experiences.

The 50th anniversary celebration not only honoured the past but also set the stage for continued growth and innovation in the years to come.
